Africa
Can we puh-lease stop calling Africa, Africa ? I’m starting to get peeved, annoyed, and wanting to stick a fork in my eye every time I hear media and everybody else refer to Africa, a continent of 53 countries and more than a thousand languages, as Africa. It’s too varied by land, culture, religion, health, and socio-politically to refer to it simply as Africa . If you’re going to talk about something or someone on the continent, let’s try being a little more specific. Would an Italian want to be a called European? a Pakistani, Asian? And would any American accept being called North American? (I mean to be lumped with Mexico and Canada ??!, no offense neighbors) I’m not an expert on the continent by any means, but I think it’s about time we give the whole continent its due by referring to the many countries, tribes, and people that make it up. I think this diction echoes our ignorance of the land in every facet and a colonialist type sentiment of lumping the peoples together because who really cares to know? Just think about it for a second. So let’s educate ourselves on the land, the culture/history, and the happenings of what’s going on in Africa to simply learn about a people that have been ignored pretty well by the west since we got out of there.
